Intense Pulse Light (IPL) uses wavelength technology to minimize pore size, reduce sun damage, clear age spots, and shrink broken capillaries. Because it is non-invasive, it allows doctors to make cosmetic improvements quickly, conveniently, and with very little discomfort. The technology uses a high-powered, hand-held, computer-controlled flashgun to deliver an intense, visible, broad-spectrum pulse of light, generally in the visible spectral range of 515 to 1200 nm. Various cutoff filters are commonly used to selectively filter out shorter wavelengths, especially potentially damaging ultraviolet light. The resulting light has a spectral range that targets specific structures and chromophores (e.g. melanin in sunspots, or oxyhemoglobin in blood vessels) that are heated to destruction and reabsorbed by the body.
The ND YAG QSwitch laser comes in 2 wavelengths, 1064 nm and 532 nm. It is a non-ablative laser, which means that there is no break in skin tissue continuity during the treatment. It is designed to target pigment cells. These specific wavelengths are absorbed preferentially by pigments (melanin), and the resultant heat causes generation and propagation of waves that damage the cells containing pigment. These damaged cells are then cleared from the site, resulting in lightening of the pigmented area.
